Holiday Tips · Costa Brava travel guide
A swimming pool can make a Costa Brava holiday feel wonderfully relaxed, but attractive photos do not tell the whole story. Before choosing a property, these seven questions can help you decide whether the pool really suits your group.
Thinking about where to stay? Explore our holiday homes with a swimming pool on the Costa Brava while you plan the details of your trip.

1. Is the pool private or shared?
The word “pool” does not automatically mean exclusive use. Check the individual property description carefully and ask if anything is unclear.
The presence of a pool in a photograph does not tell you who can use it. If privacy matters, confirm that it belongs to the property rather than being shared. Also check whether any pool facilities have seasonal operating arrangements.
2. Where is it located?
A pool may be lower down in the garden, partly hidden from view or reached by steps. Look at the photographs from different angles and consider whether access is practical for everyone.
Look closely at how the terrace connects to the house. Is the dining area close to the pool, or does everyone need to walk around the building? Think about how you will actually spend an ordinary holiday afternoon, not just what looks attractive in a wide-angle image.
3. Is it suitable for children?
If you are travelling with children, ask whether there is a fence or barrier, and check the layout of paths and terraces. Never assume a walled garden makes a pool safe. Children need constant, active supervision near water. Our guide for families with young children has more tips.
Families with young children have different priorities from a group of adult friends. You may care about shallow access, a place for adults to sit nearby or protection from direct sun. Never assume a fence, alarm or shallow section is present unless the individual listing confirms it.
4. What is the depth and how do you get in?
Depth, size and entry steps can be difficult to judge from pictures. Ask for the details that matter to your group before booking.
5. Is there enough shade and seating?
Comfortable sun loungers are nice, but shade and a nearby outdoor table are often just as important in summer, especially for families.
It is often the space around the pool that makes a holiday memorable: somewhere shaded for lunch, enough seats for everyone and room to relax even when not swimming. Consider the terrace and garden photos alongside the pool itself.
6. Can you use the pool during your travel dates?
Outdoor pools depend on the weather, maintenance and the individual accommodation. They are not automatically heated. Read our guide to swimming seasons on the Costa Brava if you are travelling in spring or autumn.
7. Does the rest of the home fit your needs?
Do not focus entirely on the pool. Bedrooms, bathrooms, parking, outdoor space and location will affect every day of your holiday. A great pool cannot make up for an inconvenient layout.
A beautiful pool is only part of your accommodation. Make sure the bedrooms, bathrooms and location work for the people travelling with you. A good layout can matter just as much as a morning dip when you are staying for a week or more.
