Group Holidays · Costa Brava travel guide
Renting one holiday home with relatives or family friends can be a lovely way to spend time together. Children have playmates and adults can share meals, but a few practical agreements will help everyone enjoy their own kind of holiday.

Talk about expectations before departure
Families rarely keep exactly the same routine. Young children may nap, older children may stay up late and some adults may want an early start. Agree on a few shared moments while allowing everyone plenty of independence.
Before booking, talk about the pace you would each enjoy. One family may be happy to start the day at seven; another might need a slower morning. A few shared plans, such as dinner together, are usually enough to make the trip feel connected without forcing every family into the same routine.
Bedrooms and bathrooms matter
The total number of beds is only one part of choosing a property. Think about privacy, how bedrooms are distributed, noise between floors and whether there are enough bathrooms in the morning. A floor plan or detailed property description can be very helpful.
Assign bedrooms before arrival so nobody has to negotiate sleeping arrangements with tired children waiting in the hallway. Count bathrooms, look at where the children will sleep and consider whether any rooms are reached by steep stairs. A headline guest capacity cannot tell you how comfortable the layout will feel.
Take outdoor safety seriously
Check stairs, gates, terraces and whether the pool is separated from the rest of the outdoor space. Do not assume that a wall around the property makes the pool child-safe. Agree explicitly which adult is supervising children at any given time. See our tips for the Costa Brava with young children.
Pool safety deserves an explicit conversation between adults. Agree who is responsible for supervising children at any given moment rather than assuming someone else is watching. Check the property description for the real access arrangement, as fencing, gates and shallow areas must never be taken for granted.
Split costs and tasks fairly
A shared grocery budget and a few simple agreements about cooking can prevent unnecessary tension. Some evenings you may want to eat together; on others, every family can choose its own plan.
A shared shopping list helps more than you might expect. Agree on breakfast basics, a few ingredients for easy dinners and who will buy them. You can share everyday costs while leaving special treats to individual families; it makes the holiday feel fair without tracking every small expense.
Make room for togetherness and quiet
A dining area with enough space, several outdoor seats and a quiet corner for reading can make a big difference. Look for a property that offers privacy as well as sociable shared areas.
Keep activities flexible
A beach visit or an easy afternoon outing can work well across different ages. For ideas, see our Costa Brava family activity guide.
Try a mix of small and shared outings. A morning at the seafront in Sant Antoni de Calonge may suit everyone, but one family might then return for a nap while the others continue exploring. The value of sharing a house is having a welcoming place to meet again later.
